 To a friend, colleague, mentor--to The Sultan: You can pretend to prepare yourself for anything, but reality has a terrible way of having the final say.. You gave us so much, the totality of your talents and skills, yet most of us will probably never fully understand what you meant to us untitl we wrestle with the void you have left in our hearts in the coming weeks. Most will never know how much cutting and pasting you did outside of school, how much extra practice time you put into accompaniment parts, all because you could be satisfied only with the best. I wish I could have said "thanks" one last time, but you're gone now, and you've left us all fumbling with how to go on. We miss you already; your sharp wit, smart aleck remarks, and the sweet, cynical old man that none of us will regret knowing. Hear our thoughts; they go out to you with fond memories and in cases such as my own, with many tears. As for me, I'm the benefactor of so much. You've helped me so much, perhaps more than I ever recognized you for, and it's you I have to thank for any achievements Vocal Jazz One may enjoy. As a friend, you were always thoughtful, and I wish I could have done more to express my gratitude for your collaboration and your friendship. You've impacted thousands, perhaps more, with your music and humanity.
I suppose all I can do now is let your legacy live on, through our music, and through what we do everyday. Rest easy friend, and know that you're in our thoughts and prayers, and I know you're laughing your head off at watching me having to play piano in your stead... Poly Love, Brian Dokko

On Thursday through Friday, February 14-15, 2008, public visitation/viewings will be held for Bill Steck for all that wish to see him before we say farewell at Monday's memorial. Information: McKenzie Mortuary

There will be a public memorial service for Bill Steck on Monday, February 18, 2008 at 11:00am at Our Savior Lutheran Church at 370 Junipero in Long Beach. Everyone is welcome to come pay final repects to a great pianist and friend. We will also be taking a collection to present to the family on Monday, so if you would like to support Bill's family in this way, please do so by Friday, February 15, 2008. It is with a heavy heart and much sadness we say an unexpected farewell to Bill Steck, who passed away on Friday evening, February 8, 2008 of a heart attack. More information will be posted here in the coming days as soon as it becomes available, but for now, please keep his family and our Poly family in your prayers and thoughts, as it will be an impossibly difficult time for all of us...
